First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels
Mozilla's Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox's new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel -- which is analogous to Chrome Canary -- that will be called 'aurora' and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new 'nightly icon.' The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including 'aurora') are not necessarily final, but it's unlikely that they'll change. We're also awaiting the arrival of the new 'channel switching' technology, which should arrive in the next few days -- in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

Android Central international round-up - March 31, 2012

Android CentralNext week is HTC One week in Europe, and over the past seven days we've seen more tantalizing details about HTC's new One X and One S smartphones. Stores in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are expected to carry HTC One phones from next Monday, April 2, with a wider European launch for the One X and One S slated for Thursday, April 5. It's one of the biggest Android launches of the year. We're excited, and we're sure you are, too, so be sure to keep watching for more HTC One goodness as the phones finally hit store shelves

Aside from shiny new toys, the steady trickle of Ice Cream Sandwich updates continued this week, with the O2 Galaxy S II and Vodafone HTC Sensation both receiving their updates. And original Galaxy S owners finally got their hands on the promised "value pack", which brings some ICS features to the current Gingerbread firmware.

Oh, and Samsung launched its very own "store within a store" at Phones4U in London. (Yo dawg, I heard you like stores.)

Check some highlights from past week's Android developments in Europe, Asia and beyond in the list below. And if you've got international news, you can tip us at the usual address.

Netflix snags DVD.com domain, invests in the future of optical media

Image
Looking for a shortcut to Netflix's home on the web? Try hitting up DVD.com -- it'll take you there, for now. The latest address to join the family of Netflix redirects actually brings you to a subdomain -- dvd.netflix.com -- suggesting that the company could once again be planning to split its streaming and physical media services, at least from an access perspective. A shareholder letter lists the company's U.S. DVD subscriptions at 11.17 million at the end of Q4, bringing in a total of $370 million in revenue, with a profit of $194 million. Compare this to domestic streaming, which represents $476 million in revenue with a mere $52 million profit, and it's clear that the DVD rental market is still quite strong. So what could this latest domain acquisition mean for snail mail subscribers? DVD-only customers may soon have a new site to call home, with focused content and perhaps an upsell opportunity or two. At the very least, it certainly can't hurt when it comes to SEO.

LG Optimus Elite gets photographed, decked out in Sprint and Virgin livery
Not a fan of that 5-inch, IPS display on the Optimus Vu? Perhaps, you'd be more interested in a smaller, lesser-specced member of the family. According to PocketNow, the Optimus Elite is sprinting its way toward The Now Network and Virgin Mobile, with an expected launch on the former "rather soon" and the latter as early as May. The Elite is allegedly packing some run-of-the-mill features, including a 3.5-inch, HVGA screen alongside a five-megapixel rear shooter and an 800Mhz CPU. Both flavors look identical, save for Virgin's prepaid flavor going with a darker look, which you can gander at by jumping past the break.

ICS for the Droid RAZR/MAXX and HTC Rezound coming next week, says Best Buy memo

Best Buy

We don't want anyone to get too excited and set themselves up for a heartbreak just yet, but a leaked document from Best Buy pins the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX for April 4, and the HTC Rezound on April 6. Anyone with a HTC Thunderbolt can tell you more about dates provided through Best Buy, and Motorola still hasn't given any type of ballpark date for the update for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, which are still listed as being in the "evaluation and planning" stage. We've seen ICS leaks for both devices (the RAZR and RAZR MAXX run the same software) but nothing official from anyone involved. Both phones were to have ICS "soon" after release, but so far we're still waiting.

We want it to be true. We hope it's true. We're just naturally skeptical, especially when a third party like Best Buy is involved. We're sure nobody is trying to troll the Internets, but anyone who has worked in a corporate environment knows how things get fouled up. Here's hoping, and we'll know next week!

Cute Baby Sloth Photobombs a Group Picture [Image Cache]

As desirable a lifestyle as sloths live, they're hardly ever cute. This baby sloth however, is the cutest darn thing on the Internet. A group of students were taking a picture in Costa Rica when an upside down sloth crept into the shot and stayed there, giving the picture a hilarious photobomb. [NY Daily News] More »

This Building's Balconies Are Actually Swimming Pools [Architecture]

Witness this architectural nightmare and deadly accident waiting to happen: a 37-story, twin tower apartment building that has apartments with swimming pools instead of balconies. Or balconies that are really swimming pools enclosed in glass. Or... whatever. No matter what you want to call this, I would call it crazy. More »
